peaches in wine, 2 ways

peaches in wine glasses, 2 ways | theclevercarrot.com

At any given time, you could find the following in my grandmother’s fridge: homemade chocolate mousse, gruyere cheese, and a bowl of juicy sweet peaches soaked in wine for my grandpa.

“Got any peaches?” he would ask. “I could really go for some peaches in wine tonight!”

He loved enjoying this dessert while relaxing in his favorite chair after dinner.

My grandmother was French. He was Italian… a food marriage made in heaven (and a huge DNA perk for our family!).

As a kid however, I was only interested in the chocolate mousse.

The peaches? Not so much.

I didn’t realize their appeal until I was an adult.

And here, we’re doing it 2 ways….

5 minute white peach margaritas

5 minute white peach margaritas | theclevercarrot.com

My office looks like a giant garage sale.

And by garage sale, I’m referring to the excess amount of blogging paraphernalia including (but not limited to) Anthropologie bowls, dishes, legos, stacks of bills, a random nesting suitcase, and other props that seem to make sense all in the name of creativity.

But it’s absurd.

You can barely walk around without tripping over something. And from an outsider’s perspective, it must look like I’m a doomed hoarder or something! I have grand plans to clean it all one day but for now, I’ll settle on the excuse that it’s just a tiny room. You know, small house problems…

blood orange negroni

blood orange negroni | The Clever Carrot

5 PM is a magical time in our house. I call it rush hour…

When the clock strikes, my darling little boys morph into CRAZED monsters. They scream. They break things. The cats fear for their lives. It’s like they’ve been cast by a spell! If you have little kids, you know exactly what I’m talking about about.

Enter: husband with cocktail.

clementines | The Clever Carrot

One night (after the craziness had settled down), my husband made me a blood orange negroni. I’ve never had one before and to be honest with you, I was kind of bummed. When I think of a negroni, I picture an old man’s drink. My grandpa loves them.

But an old man’s drink it is not!

My negroni was wonderfully light and refreshing. It was made with campari, gin, sweet vermouth, and a splash of blood orange soda (Trader Joe’s strikes again!) He even garnished it with thinly sliced clementines. Très chic.

So now I’m a negroni fan. I love the slightly bitter, slightly sweet taste with hints of heavenly orange (I guess Gramps was onto something…) It makes a wonderful aperitif as well. Two can play at this game, rush hour!

*If you can’t find blood orange soda, substitute with fresh orange juice (navels, clementines, or blood oranges will work too). Add club soda and a little agave syrup if you like it sweet.
